Archive for Download Of The Week
When a band like Haim is in the Top 5 albums chart on iTunes, I think it’s cause for celebration. Their debut album Days Are Gone is so good it’s probably all I’m going to listen to this week. It’s especially cool that Haim has the story they have too. I want to flashback to a year ago for this short documentary that shows it well.
Musaic is a new app that lets you share and discover music with your friends for free so to celebrate its launch the creators of it decided to also bless us with this incredible mix. It features songs from Active Child, Blondie and Classixx, among others.
The best artists know how to evolve. Mateo’s evolution has led to We’ve Met Before. The title is a wink at how he’s been working at this break for a long time, dating back even before I signed him to his first record deal at MySpace Records. His persistence has paid off. When I put him in a studio with Grammy award winning producer Krucial Brothers, I knew only good things could come of it but as it turns out some great things have come out of it– this EP being the best example so far.
It’s an EP that perfects the alternative R&B sound Mateo’s been developing. Not only is Mateo’s sound elevated but through his songwriting you’ll take flight too. The lead song, How Good Is Your Love, describes a girl in great detail with the verses, even down to how she rolls up the perfect j, but with the chorus the important question that is still unanswered is just how good her love is. The only issue with We’ve Met Before is that it’s only 5 songs. It leaves you anticipating what his full length album will be. In the meantime, download We’ve Met Before.
I’ll never forget when Drake came into my office years ago, fresh off shooting Degrassi and hungry to break into the music game. I couldn’t be prouder of how he’s evolved over the years and now with this new song, he continues that. Drizzy’s at his best when he gets melodic and he goes all the way with it on this. The new album Nothing Was The Same drops September 17.
This series of mixes has become one of my favorite things about summer.
Quadron is a Danish duo consisting of singer Coco O and musician/producer Robin Hannibal. They’ve been on my radar since their manager/my friend Anthony Demby put their music into my inbox. Quadron makes the kind of soul music that adds on to everything that’s been working in the genre. Coco’s voice is classic and she uses it as passionately as she should. For example, this video for their single Hey Love off their new album Avalanche.
I’ll never forget when my friend Shelley got me out to one of their first shows and we proceeded to dance our asses off. 2AM Club has the kind of fun that I always want to have. It’s refreshing to see a new band not take themselves too seriously and serve up such a dope soundtrack for the good times. Check it out below and download it here.
At the rate Kendrick’s been ascending in the hip hop ranks, it was only a matter of time that a collaboration like this would happen. They both bring their A games on this remix with plenty of lyrics that will have you hitting the rewind button. Jay usually dominates any song he’s on but Kendrick’s presence is undeniably as strong here.
I appreciate you giving me the time I needed to grow, experiment, and find the direction for my 2nd album.. And I have. Along the way I’ve recorded at least 4 albums worth of material, lots of it being unfinished demo versions waiting to be polished up, some of them are great songs and important stories that just won’t make the album (either they don’t fit Sonically, don’t fit Theme, or there’s just not enough space) .
Tonight, I want to give you a few of these songs because you deserve them. It’s hard as fuck for me to keep all this music from you for so long, so I know it’s been hard for you to wait. Thank you for your patience. Vibe out to these songs in their raw form, no polish.. just a lot of my soul..
The wait is over.
